Managed budgets of between 10 and 15 million euros. Developed a wide international network of leaders in quality improvement and have developed a comprehensive global health improvement programme based on international and national best practice. Continued a clinical practice in inner city Dublin and with the Homeless population which grounds the strategic and policy work in front line service reality.

Have been a partner and effectively business manager of a busy inner city general practice. Built a strong team of 50 staff to advance the work we are doing on improving health care quality. A career of building high performing teams and businesses through instigating and managing change and driving teams to be the best they can be in their area of expertise. Bring a strong personal commitment to patient care borne out of more than 30 years of experience of working with patients and engaging patient groups to empower them to drive care improvement.

My work in developing health care in less developed countries is based on my learned experience of working for 5 years in Nicaragua and my leadership of the HSE global health programme.

Major Projects

Irish Commission on Patient Safety and Quality Assurance

Led the process to develop a national policy to provide assurance on the quality and safety of health services in Ireland following a serious adverse event.

National Quality and Patient Safety Delivery strategy

Moved to the National health service leadership team to develop a team and a strategy to address gaps in the policies and procedures in national health service delivery from a quality and patient safety perspective.

Patient participation policy and strategy

Developed a national policy on partnering with patents and service users in Ireland. Led the implementation of this policy across the Irish health services, always had two patient representatives on my health service leadership team.

Irish National Global health Programme

Established and led the Irish Health Services Executive Global Health Programme.  This under my stewardship, went on to develop health service improvement programmes in Mozambique, Tanzania, Ethiopia, and Sudan.

National Healthcare Climate Strategy

Led the development of a national strategy to reduce the impact of the national health service on the environment. Then led the implementation of a series of programs to reduce waste and achieve carbon emission reduction targets.

Community Action on Health Newcastle Upon Tyne, UK

Developed a city-wide network of health service development work with local disadvantaged communities to work in partnership to address health inequalities and inequity in access to health services

Chronic Disease Management Programs in Northern Nicaragua

Worked in overseas development to establish chronic disease management programs to care for patients across the region who suffered from chronic diseases. Trained local doctors to deliver appropriate care and established patient groups to work together to address lifestyle and management issues in chronic disease care.

Covid 19 pandemic management

Co-led the national public health response to the Covid pandemic. Led the establishment of lay person contact tracing teams. Established a national leadership daily decision-making forum to make all decisions regarding pandemic management in Ireland.

Board member of the International Society in Quality in Healthcare ISQUA

As an active board member have overseen the global healthcare accreditation program approach. I have supported the development of the international education programs.
