Dr. Richard A. Molteni, MD, FAAP

Professional Experience:
Dr. Molteni, a pediatrician and neonatologist, is an accomplished academician directing numerous NICU’s and pediatric hospital services, overseeing student, resident and fellowship education, while also conducting clinical and basic science research.
He maintained academic appointments at the University of Colorado, Johns Hopkins Hospital and School of Medicine, the University of Utah and Primary Children’s Hospital, Geisinger Health System and Children’s Hospital, and the Penn State Hersey School of Medicine. He completed his academic and medical leadership work as the SVP Medical Director of Seattle Children’s Hospital, as well as Professor of Pediatrics and Associate Dean at the University of Washington School of Medicine.
Dr. Molteni, in addition to his clinical, educational and research interests was responsible for the business performance of his medical departments, including physician billing and coding at both the department and medical school levels, as well as insurance contracting, internal audits and compliance reviews.
In Seattle he managed a medical staff over 450 individuals of all disciplines and specialties, shared oversight of Joint Commission and State accreditation activities while focusing on patient safety, family and patient satisfaction using “lean” principles of quality improvement and “waste” reduction.
Following his full-time retirement Dr. Molteni took his experience in quality and safety to part time consulting and accreditation preparation with domestic Joint Commission Resources (JCR followed by similar consultative services at Joint Commission International (JCI).
Awards
Dr. Molteni volunteered extensively in eastern Europe during Russian occupation with Project Hope (Poland, Hungary, Slovakia and Czech Republic), followed by Central America and mainland China. He was awarded Hope’s Certificate of Merit for his dedicated service. He has also volunteered and held multiple Committee and Leadership positions for the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) and the American Medical Association (ANA)
He was Awarded the Abraham Jacobi Father of Pediatrics award by both organizations. In addition, the AAP awarded him the Charles Vanciere Award for service to pediatricians and the field of Pediatrics, and also the AAP’s Neonatal Section’s Landmark Award for contributions that changed the course of that discipline. Seattle Children also named their annual medical staff Quality/Safety award the Richard A. Molteni Award in Quality/Safety.
